Before the giant wind turbines took over, their little cousins ruled the plains. Small windmills pumped water to settlers, pioneers, and ranchers in the Lone Star state. Before electricity came to rural America, these old-fashioned windmills stood on virtually every farm and ranch, bringing life-sustaining water from underground.
This low-tech solution doesn't need electricity, diesel generators, or easy-to-steal solar panels to provide a steady water supply. The windmill's simplicity is part of its appeal. Here in the U.S., nostalgia is pushing up prices for vintage models, even the ones full of bullet holes, as the windmill's tails are popular targets for bored hunters. Now an old windmill costs as much as a new one. The old Aermotors, the old windmills, they make you feel like you're back in frontier days.
There are still thousands of the old fashioned windmills dotting the landscapes in the Texas Hill Country ... there is a certain nostalgia to those windmills. A made in China turbine that has been passed over for more efficient energy production isn't going to have the same beauty languishing in the West Texas sunset, I'm afraid.

Rock balancing is an internationally recognized craft. You do need a bit of patience and a knack for "knowing the rocks," to build sculptures with rocks from the natural landscape.

The act of balancing rocks may seem totally pointless, but it can be a fun, challenging, and even meditative process. Rock stacks, also known as cairns, can serve practical, recreational, and spiritual purposes. Hikers may mark trails with cairns to find their way home; adventurers may stack stones to take a break from their activity; nature lovers and zen seekers may find refuge in the process of physically balancing stones. No matter the function of rock stacks, they are all consistently made only of rocks, without the use of glue or mud. Gravity is the glue.

Once you begin the contemplation of cairns, you keep spotting them. They appear far from mountain summits, in fields and forests and even residential areas. And once the idea is in your head, it can be hard to tell whether you are really viewing a cairn or your imagination is shaping one out of an accidental group of rocks.

San Diego's beautiful bay features 34 linear miles of scenic waterfront which includes restaurants, boutiques, hotels, attractions, parks, ecological preserves and boat marinas. There are seven distinct areas that each lends unique components to the overall flow and character of the waterfront. Whether you spend an entire day trying to explore all seven areas or explore each area individually, the San Diego Bay has something enjoyable for everyone's taste and budget.

On any given day, one can view people motoring on yachts, gliding across the bay on sailboats, kayaking, fishing, cycling, jogging, doing yoga, playing basketball, or just plain lounging under the warm San Diego sun. The Continental Shelf extends many miles offshore, protecting us from the brunt of localized North Pacific storm surges and distant Southern Ocean swells. This and a temperate climate make San Diego's beaches safe and pleasant virtually year-round.

The Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park would not exist if it were not for a timely and costly donation by John D Spreckels, whose name the Organ and the Pavilion proudly bear, to the City of San Diego in 1914 for the Panama-California Exposition. It is one of the world's largest outdoor pipe organs in the world.

This unique organ contains 4,530 pipes ranging in length from the size of a pencil to 32 feet and is housed in an ornate vaulted pavilion with highly embellished gables. Since 1917, San Diego has had a civic organist, who performs free weekly Sunday concerts. Dr. Carol Williams has been the San Diego Civic Organist and Artistic Director of the Spreckels Organ Society in San Diego, California since 2001.

Music may not be more important than bread on the table: it is, nonetheless, a component of a happy life.

Highway 1 hugs almost all of California's coastline. In the northern part of the state, it runs from Hales Grove south to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hales Grove (formerly, Monroe and Monroeville) is unincorporated, populated community in Mendocino County, CA. It is located on California State Route 1 adjacent to the South Fork of Mule Creek 11 miles (18 km) south of Piercy, at an elevation of 1138 feet (347 m).

The Monroe post office opened in 1897, and after several moves closed in 1912.

After the Civil War, Waco, TX was a struggling little town nestled on the west bank of the Brazos River. No bridges crossed the Brazos, the longest body of water in Texas. During floods, days and even weeks passed before travelers as well as cattle could safely cross the river.

Although money was scarce and times were hard, a group of businessmen formed Waco Bridge Company and secured a twenty-five-year contract to construct and operate the only toll bridge for five miles up and down the river. The Waco Suspension Bridge was the first suspension bridge in Texas and one of the largest suspension bridge spans in the world when the original structure was completed in late 1869/early 1870. The bridge was opened January 7, 1870 and functioned for twenty years as a toll bridge with a 24 hour toll keeper - by 1871 between 600,000 and 700,000 head of cattle had passed through the city. On September 1, 1889, the Suspension Bridge was purchased by McLennan county for $75,000 and conveyed to the city of Waco for one dollar.

Although the large brick towers appear to be the only major remnant of the original bridge this structure is a very charming suspension bridge that forms a historical centerpiece for Waco. In 1971 the bridge was converted to a pedestrian crossing. Today lovely, shaded parkland edges both sides of the river and the bridge enjoys a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and designation by a Texas Historical marker.

CenterPoint Energy Tower - also known as: The Tower of Power - also known as: Kilowatt Tower - formerly: CenterPoint Energy Plaza - formerly: Reliant Energy Plaza - formerly: Houston Industries Plaza - formerly: 1100 Milam

The CenterPoint Energy Tower is a 741 ft (226 m) building in downtown Houston, Texas. When originally built in 1974, the structure stood at 651 feet (198 m). The building is an example of what can be achieved with a little imagination.

Like a number of other skyscrapers in Houston, The Tower of Power was a boring block of black glass. Sure, energy efficient, but not very attractive. Then in 1996 something wonderful happened. The Kilowatt Tower was transformed into a Houston landmark by the architectural firm of DMJM Keating. It added a six-story cap to the skyscraper with a big hole cut into it. In text, it sounds stupid. But from the ground, from the air, and from neighboring buildings it's a treat by day and a beacon when illuminated by night.

Richard Keating's renovation dramatically changed Houston's Skyline and its downtown. Besides the crown, the coolest thing in this building is a photographic moon mural running the length of the building's frontage in the tunnel system. Just take the escalator to the food court in the basement.
